The Revenant Film Review

Hardy's performance is definitely the showier of the two leads, with Fitzgerald being as scarred psychologically as he is physically. He's ruthless, practical, greedy, bigoted, tough as nails -- so basically probably exactly what fur trappers were really like. Poulter and Goodluck bring youthful vulnerability to their respective roles, while Gleeson imbues what could have been a one-note character with earnestness and humanity. Arthur Redcloud also has a small, but memorable role as a Native American who crosses paths with Glass. This is certainly not a film for all tastes. It's emotionally and visually unrelenting, it's long and at times repetitive in what we see Glass go through, and the very final moments of the film are a bit underwhelming and abrupt.

The Revenant 2015 Feature Film Review

If you don't like Malick-esque esoteric touches (think The New World and To the Wonder) then The Revenant will likely leave you cold; others may simply find the film self-indulgent and pretentious. But in an age of extended toy commercials passing for movies, it's imperative that a film like The Revenant be recognized for the gutsy cinematic experiment it is.
